Back Pain in Coeur d'Alene: Why It Keeps Coming Back, and What to Do
If you've had your back adjusted dozens of times and the pain still returns, you don't need more adjustments. You need someone to fix the muscles holding the joint in the wrong place.
Back pain is the single most common reason people walk into my office in Coeur d’Alene. And in most cases, they walk in frustrated — because they’ve already tried adjustments, stretching, ice, ibuprofen, and rest. The pain backs off for a few days, sometimes a week, then comes right back. They’re starting to think it’s just how their back is now.
It isn’t. Let me explain what’s actually happening.
The Real Reason Your Back Keeps Hurting
Your spine doesn’t drift out of alignment randomly. Bones move because the muscles that hold them in place have stopped doing their job. A muscle gets injured, overworked, or guarded after a flare-up — and it goes offline. The vertebrae it was supporting drift, the muscles around it tighten to compensate, and the result is the dull-to-sharp low back pain you’re feeling right now.
A traditional chiropractic adjustment can put those vertebrae back in position. But if the underlying muscle is still offline, the bones drift right back the same day. That’s the cycle most of my new patients have been stuck in for years.
What I Actually Do
When you come in for back pain, I don’t go straight to the adjustment. I start with a full muscle assessment — testing the muscles along your spine, your core, your hips, your glutes — to find out which ones have shut down and which ones are overworking to cover for them.
Then I use Muscle Therapy to reactivate the offline muscles. I use myofascial release on the chronically tight ones. Then I deliver a gentle Activator adjustment — no twisting, no cracking — to put the joint back where it belongs. Because the supporting muscles are now doing their job, the adjustment holds. That’s the whole point.
The Other Half: Functional Movement
Once we’ve handled the immediate pain, I’ll show you what’s been driving it. Posture habits at work. Lifting mechanics. The way you sit in your truck for an hour each morning. Most back pain has a daily contributor, and if we don’t address it, the same muscles will shut down again.
You don’t need a complicated program — usually just three or four targeted exercises and a couple of awareness cues. The point is that you understand your own body well enough to keep yourself out of trouble.
How Long This Takes
Most of my back pain patients feel a real difference inside the first two or three visits. Significant relief usually lands by visit five or six. Most are done in the 6–10 visit range. After that, you’re free to live your life — and you have the tools to keep doing it without coming back every week.
If you live in Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, Hayden, or Rathdrum and you’re tired of back pain that won’t quit, book a visit or call (208) 660-2480.
