Muscle Works Chiropractic
Hands-on therapy that breaks up fascial adhesions and scar tissue to restore mobility, reduce pain, and improve circulation throughout the body.
Myofascial release is a hands-on therapy that targets the fascia — the connective tissue web that surrounds every muscle, bone, nerve, and organ in your body. At Muscle Works Chiropractic in Coeur d’Alene, Dr. Brent Hirschi uses advanced myofascial techniques to break up restrictions, restore mobility, and free the body to move the way it was designed to move.

Fascia is everywhere. It wraps individual muscle fibers, bundles them together, and connects one muscle group to the next in a continuous, interwoven web. When fascia is healthy, it glides and stretches like shrink-wrap plastic on warm skin. But when the body experiences injury, surgery, inflammation, repetitive strain, or even emotional stress, fascia can dry out, stiffen, and form adhesions — sticky bands that restrict the free slide of muscle fibers and pull on nearby joints.
Once a fascial restriction is in place, it quietly shapes the way you move. You may notice a tight hamstring, a shoulder that won’t reach, or a low back that feels like a rope. Stretching it rarely helps for long, because the root cause isn’t the muscle — it’s the fascial sleeve around it. Myofascial release applies sustained, specific pressure to those restrictions to coax the tissue into releasing. When the fascia lets go, the muscle finally moves, the joint rotates freely, and the compensation pattern begins to unwind.
Dr. Hirschi uses a combination of hands-on and instrument-assisted approaches — including FAKTR (Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehabilitation), Active Release Technique (A.R.T.), and classic manual myofascial stretching — so he can match the technique to the tissue and the severity of the restriction.
Your myofascial release session at Muscle Works starts with a quick reassessment. Dr. Hirschi checks how your body is moving, notes any change since your last visit, and identifies the fascial restrictions that are contributing to your current complaint. Treatment is typically done directly on the skin or over light clothing, depending on the area.
You’ll feel firm, sustained pressure — sometimes with a small tool that glides along the tissue, sometimes with Dr. Hirschi’s hands. With A.R.T., you’ll be asked to move the affected joint while he holds the tissue, so the fascia releases dynamically during motion. The sensation is usually described as “good discomfort” — intense but tolerable, with immediate relief when the restriction gives way. Sessions typically last 15 to 30 minutes and are frequently combined with Muscle Therapy and Activator adjustments for a coordinated, full-body result.
Plenty of massage therapists and physical therapists in the Coeur d’Alene area offer myofascial work — and many do it well. What makes Muscle Works different is the integration. Dr. Hirschi doesn’t treat fascia in isolation. He uses Muscle Therapy first to reactivate any muscles that have shut down, gentle Activator adjustments to correct joint position, and myofascial release to free the connective tissue that’s been holding the compensation in place. Treating all three systems together is why the results tend to hold longer than isolated sessions elsewhere.
Muscle Works is also a VA-credentialed clinic, so qualifying veterans with a VA community care referral receive myofascial release as part of their fully-covered chiropractic care. Patients come in from Post Falls, Hayden, Rathdrum, Dalton Gardens, and the greater Coeur d’Alene area for this kind of coordinated, whole-body approach.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients see significant relief in 6–10 visits, with myofascial release woven into the sessions as needed. Acute tightness may release in just a few visits; deeply entrenched scar tissue and long-standing compensation patterns may take longer.
Does myofascial release hurt?
It can be intense, but it shouldn’t be unbearable. The sensation is usually described as “good hurt” — firm pressure on a restriction that gives way with a noticeable release. Dr. Hirschi will always adjust the intensity to your tolerance.
Is myofascial release covered by insurance?
When delivered as part of a covered chiropractic visit, myofascial release is typically covered by most major insurance plans. VA community care referrals are fully covered. Call our office at (208) 660-2480 and we’ll verify your benefits.
How is this different from a deep-tissue massage?
Deep-tissue massage works on muscle bulk and local tension. Myofascial release targets the specific connective-tissue restrictions that are actually creating the tightness. The techniques we use — FAKTR, A.R.T., and manual myofascial stretching — are focused on precise restrictions, not general relaxation.
Can myofascial release help with old scar tissue?
Yes. Scar tissue from surgery or injury often creates fascial adhesions that pull on joints and limit movement. Myofascial release is one of the most effective ways to restore glide to those areas and reduce the mechanical pull on surrounding structures.
